Research areas in CBCS includes Perception, Attention, Emotions, Consciousness, Creativity, Decision Making, Social Cognition, Language processing, Learning Disabilities and Cognitive Development (see Research).

CBCS has been set up with the support of the University Grants Commission (UGC) as a UGC Centre of Excellence and was the first to offer courses in Cognitive Science in India. The University Grants Commission has extended the Centre of Excellence status for five more years till 2016. The Centre still offers the only Cognitive Science Master program in the country.
